How to evaluate a mileage tracker during a free trial
By FlatMile ·
At a glance
Use a mileage-tracker trial to complete your real workflow: record journeys, review their purposes, correct an issue and open a usable export. A few dots on a map do not tell you whether the product will support your month-end work.
Before starting, read the offer shown to your Apple Account, including eligibility, trial length, price and renewal terms. Do not assume every user receives the same trial or that a trial ends without becoming a paid subscription.
Choose representative journeys
Write a short list of ordinary trips you already intend to make. Include a normal customer visit, a short journey and a day with several stops if those occur in your work. Do not drive extra miles just to manufacture a large trial sample.
Keep a simple independent reference: dates, destination codes and odometer readings where practical. Record the phone, app version and relevant settings if you want to compare results later. A trial on one phone and a few routes is a personal fit check, not a general reliability benchmark.
A fictional five-task scorecard
Avery wants a log for weekly client visits and a monthly accountant handoff. Avery uses this checklist without assigning invented accuracy scores:
| Task | Evidence Avery keeps | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Capture ordinary visits | Compare expected and saved journeys | Were any journeys missing or merged? |
| Review purposes | Open three saved trips | Can the business reason be recorded clearly? |
| Correct a mistake | Preserve original and edit a sample error | Can the change be understood later? |
| Export the period | Open the actual CSV or PDF | Are dates, units and totals usable? |
| Preserve records | Inspect backup status and saved file | Can the record be accessed independently? |
If a task fails, note the exact symptom and settings before seeking support. Do not change five settings at once and then attribute the improvement to one of them. Allow enough time to see whether the issue repeats under comparable conditions.
Test the paid task you actually need
In FlatMile, automatic logging and typed manual entry are free. Access to captured-drive details and classification requires unlocking, and every app CSV or PDF export requires an active subscription or eligible trial. Use an eligible trial to evaluate those paid tasks, not merely the recording that remains available without one.
Open the exported file in the tool your recipient uses. Check a recognizable trip, business purpose, reporting period and distance units. Inspect any unresolved or excluded records. A share sheet appearing successfully does not prove that the recipient received a complete, readable report.
Make the renewal decision with your notes
List the tasks that worked, any unresolved limitation and the actual subscription price shown to you. Decide whether the paid features are worth that price for your workflow. Avoid comparing products through claims you have not tested or through a single unusually good or bad journey.
If you do not want renewal, use Apple's subscription controls. Apple recommends cancelling a free or discounted trial at least 24 hours before it ends. Confirm the displayed status; deleting an app is not a cancellation procedure.
Save any needed files while export access is available. Our subscription-end guide explains what changes in FlatMile. Your final decision should rest on a completed workflow and clear terms, not a projected tax-savings number.
